FAQ

The answers to your questions

SafeKey is a small USB device developed to protect the identity and data of the everyday internet user.

At this stage, SafeKey mainly focusses on providing two solutions for your security:

  • SafeKey is not a traditional USB storage device
  • SafeKey is not a crypto hardware wallet (cfr. Ledger or Trezor)

SafeKey Desktop is an open-source tool utilized for updating firmware of SafeKey devices and establishing manual backups of the shares of your protection plans created via inheriti.com.

Currently there are two different types of SafeKey devices:

Choosing the right SafeKey depends on your needs.

SafeKey One has been designed with one simple purpose in mind: secure user authentication.

SafeKey Pro does the same, but on top of that the SafeKey Pro is the only hardware device in the world that’s compatible with inheriti.com. You use the SafeKey Pro to store encrypted data shares of the Inheriti® protection plans.

Also have a look at the SafeKey comparison table for a full overview of features of each SafeKey.

Both SafeKey One and SafeKey Pro are available via our online store.

The number of SafeKeys you need depends on what you use it for.

In theory if you’re going for the SafeKey One to help you secure your logins to your online accounts, then 1 device should be enough. Although we always recommend to get at least 1 backup device as well.

For the SafeKey Pro it’s a bit different. All depends on the protection plans you want to create and how many shareholders there will be.

If you’re only going to create personal backup plans, then 1 SafeKey Pro is already enough to get you started. But also here we can only advice to get at least 1 extra SafeKey Pro as backup device in case your main SafeKey gets lost.

Remember that the more shares and SafeKeys you use to decentralize your backup or inheritance, the more secure and the better protected your data will be.

If you’re going to create backup plans with multiple shareholders or want to create an inheritance plan with multiple beneficiaries, then you’ll need a few more SafeKey Pro’s.

Rule of thumb is to have at least 1 SafeKey Pro per shareholder / beneficiary + 1 for your own.

Take a look at the SafeKey comparison table for a full overview of each SafeKey’s features.

Either you’re using SafeKey One or SafeKey Pro, it’s always recommended to get one or more backup devices.

If you lose your SafeKey One and you become locked out of your online accounts, you will need to contact support of all the services you’ve connected your SafeKey with, in order to disconnect that lost SafeKey. If you have a second SafeKey device connected to your accounts, you can still use that one to access your accounts.

For the SafeKey Pro it’s more complex and all depends on the settings you configured while making your protection plan. As long as there are more SafeKeys available than the minimum required amount to open a plan, you are good. If you can’t reach the minimum required amount because multiple SafeKeys are lost, the encrypted data will become unrecoverable forever.

So again: best practice is to always store some backup SafeKeys on a secure place.

SafeKey is a plug and play device and requires no additional drivers or software to be installed.

Compatible operating systems

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux
  • BSD

Compatible web browsers

  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Google Chrome
  • Safari
  • Chromium
  • Opera

See our SafeKey “Compatibility List” to get an overview of the services that allow you to use your SafeKey.

If your preferred service can not be found on the list, it is still possible the service supports SafeKey. To be 100% certain, send an email to the service and ask them if they support the WebAuthn standard and the use of hardware security keys for stronger two-factor authentication.

You can connect your SafeKey with an unlimited amount of services for stronger two-factor authentication.

If you’re using your SafeKey for passwordless logins, then you’re able to use it for up to 50 accounts.

If you’re going to use your SafeKey Pro with inheriti.com to store encrypted shares, a PIN code will act as an additional security layer to access the storage on your SafeKey device.

Make sure this PIN code isn’t too easy and only you have knowledge about it.

You can set the PIN code of your SafeKey Pro via the SafeKey Desktop tool. If your SafeKey doesn’t have a PIN code at the moment you’re using it with inheriti.com, you’ll be able to set your PIN code during the process of setting up a protection plan. Without the correct PIN code the internal storage of your SafeKey will not be accessible.
